Mitigating Cognitive Overload in Deaf Education: The Pedagogical Impact of a Multimodal Instructional Design on Digital Media Literacy Retention

ผู้แต่ง: Sirodom Maneehaet, Pongpipat Saithong, Khachakrit Liamthaisong
In evolving digital landscapes, the acquisition of digital media literacy (DML) remains a systemic challenge for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students. This disparity is largely driven by the extraneous cognitive overload and the split-attention effect caused by conventional, auditory-centric multimedia designs relegating sign language and captions to peripheral windows. This study investigates the educational efficacy of a newly developed multimodal instructional framework engineered to address these barriers by integrating a prominent visual-spatial sign language interface (Big Sign) with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Employing a one-group quasi-experimental approach, the research evaluated the proposed framework by comparing baseline pre-test scores against immediate knowledge acquisition and short-term retention among 30 DHH learners in higher education over a two-week period. Statistical analyses revealed that the intervention significantly improved initial DML competency (pre-test to post-test) and sustained high retention rates over two weeks. Furthermore, qualitative assessments conducted via semi-structured interviews highlighted a transition from fragmented, visually taxing attention patterns to a more integrated and naturalistic visual learning experience, thereby maximizing pedagogical engagement. While limited by the absence of a control group, these findings offer a scalable, evidence-based model for educators and instructional designers to transcend mere technical accessibility compliance and move toward the creation of cognitively equitable digital learning environments that optimize knowledge encoding for DHH populations.

The Correlations between Sudoscan® Parameters and Neuropathic Symptoms in Diabetes

ผู้แต่ง: Thammarat Koksungnoen, Hylton B. Menz, WIttawat Naewwongse, Surasa Khongprasert
The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between electrochemical skin conductance (ESC) measured by Sudoscan and neuropathic symptoms in patients with diabetes. A total of 44 patients with diabetes (mean age = 67.23 ± 4.29 years, HbA1c = 7.53 ± 0.88 %) underwent comprehensive assessments using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) and Sudoscan. Additionally, neuropathic symptoms were evaluated using the Neuropathy Symptom Score (NSS), Short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), Foot Pain Manikin, and 10 g monofilament test. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to determine associations between ESC and neuropathic symptom measures. Significant negative correlations were observed between ESC and NSS (r = -0.583, P < 0.001), McGill Pain Questionnaire scores (r = 0.401, P < 0.007), Foot Pain Manikin scores (r = -0.411, P < 0.006), and 10 g monofilament test results (r = -0.394, P < 0.008). The results highlight a strong correlation between Sudoscan parameters and clinical neuropathic symptoms, suggesting its potential as a non-invasive tool for assessing both small and large fiber impairment in diabetes. Future research should explore longitudinal changes in ESC to further elucidate its prognostic value in neuropathy progression.

Effects of Thai Dance-Based Aerobic Training on Gait, Balance, Muscle Strength and Sudomotor Function in People with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

ผู้แต่ง: Thammarat Koksungnoen, Hylton B. Menz, WIttawat Naeowong, Surasa Khongprasert
Background: Dance-based exercise has been shown to improve balance, glucose control, and neuromuscular function. Thai dance, which involves rhythmic and multi directional movements, may offer a culturally appropriate and enjoyable form of aerobic exercise for older adults. This study aimed to examine the effects of a 12-week Thai Dance Aerobic Training (TDAT) program on gait, balance, muscle strength, and sudomotor function in individuals with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Methods: Forty-four DPN participants were allocated to either a 12-week Thai Dance Aerobic Training (TDAT) intervention or a control group receiving standard care. Gait, balance, muscle strength, and sudomotor function were assessed. Data were analyzed using two-way repeated measures ANOVA or non-parametric equivalents, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: The TDAT group showed significant improvements in resting heart rate, blood pressure, body fat percentage, blood glucose, and HbA1C, along with reduced sensory loss based on the 10-g monofilament test. Significant group × time interactions were found for gait parameters, balance, fear of falling, and sudomotor function, including hand and foot electrochemical skin conductance. Muscle strength in the knee extensors, flexors, dorsiflexors, and plantar flexors significantly improved in the TDAT group compared to controls. Conclusion: Thai dance-based training is a safe, engaging, and effective alternative exercise for improving gait, balance, muscle strength, and sudomotor function in people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). These findings support the potential of Thai dance as a culturally relevant, low-impact intervention that can be integrated into diabetic care programs to help manage DPN-related complications.
